The "Interest areas" list shows the most frequently occurring Ask MetaFilter tags on questions the user has answered. It's a quick summary of the types of questions the user has answered in the past. Extremely common tags are filtered out of the list, and a user must have at least ten answers to have the list in their profile. Keep in mind that a user with more answers will have a more accurate list than a user with fewer answers. Update (10/11/2009): We've removed Interest Areas from profile pages for time being.
